High Lonesome Ranch

Pasture Raised Natural Beef

Our Philosophy

Our philosophy of raising beef for consumption is driven by what we have learned over the last 13 years from several leaders in the health of the environment, health and well-being of cattle and the health of consumers.

Our philosophy began to develop in 1993 when we were fortunate enough to meet and work closely with Alan Savory and his Center for Holistic Resource Management, now known as The Center for Holistic Management. Working with Alan and the Center introduced us to a whole range of issues, but mostly we learned the benefit of managing cattle on the land the way mother nature intends. Very simply, the land and individual plants do not prosper and remain healthy if cattle are confined in one space for too long. Before humans intervened, herding ruminants severely grazed and then moved on to new locations without returning until the plants in an area recovered. Alan taught us the benefit of managing our ranch in this fashion and how to do it. The results are dramatic for the landscape, the animals, those of us who are working on the ranch and our customers.

We learned from Dick Diven the value of synchronizing the timing of calving according to the cow's nutritional needs. We calve our cows according to the availability of forage, we calve in June when our cattle are in naturally peak condition. Therefore, aside from natural kelp (seaweed)mineral, our cattle do not require supplemental feed to maintain condition and health.

We learned from Jo Robinson the value to human beings of pasture raised beef. Pasture raised beef is high in Omega-3 fatty acids. Another natural source is wild fish--not farm raised fish. Omega-3 is shown to reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer. Cultures that eat the meat of ruminant animals that graze naturally have very low incidence of heart disease and cancer. Moreover, because High Lonesome Ranch does not feed supplements to our cattle, the chances of BSE (Mad Cow Disease) is remote or even not possible, since the major way cattle contract BSE is through supplemental feed with ruminant animal residue. More can be learned from reading or visiting her web-site, www.eatwild.com.

We learned from Temple Grandin and Bud Williams the benefits of working with cattle in a manner that is humane and calming. Consequently our cattle are attracted to us and not scittish or afraid. The result is a calm set of cattle that are not nervous or excitable. That is better for all concerned--the cattle, those of us who work among them and our customers. Calm cattle produce flavorfull and tender meat.

We learned from Alan Nation and his publication Stockman Grassfarmer the concepts of sustainable agriculture and direct marketing.

We are pleased to share with you all that we have learned in the last 13 years by offering you the best product available through our
High Lonesome Ranch Pasture Raised Beef Program.
